Please note this is a self-paced and reflective study unit.
Please take time to:
Read through the page carefully.
Watch the short introductory presentation.
Engage with the listed activities and readings.
Respond to the reflective questions at the end of the unit.
Your reflections will help you connect the concept of microcredentials to your own institutional and teaching context.
Microcredentials are emerging globally as flexible, short, and quality-assured learning opportunities that respond to rapid social, technological, and environmental change. Within higher education, they provide new ways of recognising learning that is focused, responsive, and aligned with real-world needs.
In the context of the SEED microcredentials are viewed not only as short courses but as pathways for sustainable transformation. They enable universities to design learning that strengthens community engagement, advances sustainable development goals, and builds institutional readiness for change.
This brief presentation introduces the key concepts and definitions of microcredentials, explaining how they are being utilised globally and within the SEED Project.
As you watch, reflect on:
What keywords or ideas stand out for you?
How are microcredentials defined in relation to formal qualifications?
What new opportunities could they create in your institution or community?
After watching the above Presentations, reflect on how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) can support the creation of meaningful and transformative microcredentials in your institution. Think about how ESD principles such as action learning, collaboration, and reflection can guide the design of microcredentials that respond to real social–ecological challenges and help build institutional readiness for change. Use this Padlet to share your insights, examples, or questions with colleagues from other universities — there are no right or wrong answers, just shared learning and exploration.
