In this presentation, Dr Wilma van Staden discusses how digital transformation and digital literacy shape the implementation of microcredentials in higher education. The session explores key challenges faced by universities, such as limited access to technology, low digital literacy, and inadequate integration of digital tools, and highlights how digitalisation can enable more flexible, inclusive, and sustainable learning pathways.

To better understand how microcredentials are emerging across the Southern African region, the PoMiSA (Potential of Microcredentials in Southern Africa) project conducted in-depth studies in Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. These reports provide valuable insight into how different education systems are defining, adopting, and integrating microcredentials within their national qualification frameworks. Together, they illustrate how context, policy readiness, and collaboration shape the capacity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to design flexible learning pathways that respond to social and economic needs.
Lesotho’s report highlights the urgent need to bridge the national skills gap through flexible education and training aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It emphasises that microcredentials could enhance employability, innovation, and socio-economic development, particularly through stronger policy frameworks, stakeholder collaboration, and public–private partnerships.
In Namibia, microcredentials are recognised as a promising solution to youth unemployment and skills mismatch in emerging sectors such as renewable energy, ICT, and health. The report notes that awareness and policy development are still at an early stage, calling for unified national standards, greater public sector participation, and stronger links between higher education, TVET, and industry.
South Africa is progressing toward a more enabling policy environment for microcredentials, with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Council on Higher Education (CHE) developing frameworks for recognition and quality assurance. The report identifies opportunities in sectors such as IT, green energy, and health, showing how microcredentials can bridge labour market gaps while supporting flexible lifelong learning within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
As you explored in the previous presentations and regional examples, the successful development of microcredentials depends strongly on an enabling policy and institutional environment. In Zambia, several key frameworks already support this direction by integrating education, sustainability, and skills development within the country’s broader vision for inclusive growth and innovation.
These frameworks together create the foundation for integrating microcredentials and ESD into Zambia’s higher education and skills development system. They highlight ongoing efforts to align curriculum reform, digitalisation, and sustainability with the national vision for 2030.

8th National Development Plan (2022–2026) – Promotes human capital, digitalisation, and lifelong learning as key national priorities.

Malawi’s education and quality assurance frameworks create a strong base for introducing microcredentials that align with national priorities for lifelong learning, teacher development, and sustainable growth. While microcredentials are not yet formally defined in policy, several existing frameworks already promote flexibility, quality, and recognition of diverse learning pathways.
Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) – Defines qualification levels and standards across higher education, supporting comparability and the future inclusion of short, credit-bearing courses.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Guidelines – Provide mechanisms to validate informal and non-formal learning, enabling flexible pathways and skill recognition.
