A Message from the President, Dr. Rosemary Oliphant-Ingham
Welcome to the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English (MCTE). In January 2023, Dr. Missy Hopper and I began a journey to resurrect the MCTE. In chasing down every lead we could find, nobody seems to recall when MCTE was last a viable organization. Most everyone has memories and recollections of Dan McQuade. Under Dan’s supervision, the Mississippi Council was very viable, having a national reputation. After much research, we are unable to validate when this ceased to be.
Missy and I worked diligently along with helpers from the National Council of Teachers of English to complete all of the voluminous paperwork requirements from NCTE. One requirement was that we have a slate of officers in place, and thankfully there were many English folks in Mississippi willing to help. Robin, Valarie, Ellen, Mary Ann, Kristin, and Susan joined Missy and myself as executive board members. We were able to locate the original constitution for the organization, but it was dated and needed to be revised. Under the guidance of Missy, the executive committee revised and updated the constitution. We have Lily to thank for our Magnolia blossom logo and all things website-related.
All requirements were met by July 2023, and paperwork was submitted to the National affiliate for our reinstatement. Our request to regain our status as an official affiliate of NCTE came in December 2023. As President of MCTE, it is with delight that I am able to welcome you to NCTE’s newest state affiliate.
Membership information will be forthcoming. We hope that you will join us in creating a network of teachers and other interested parties whose mission it is to make Mississippi and its students find a love for the language arts and all they entail.
