Vivian Doerr Awarded a UF T32 Neuromuscular Plasticity Training Grant Position

May 2021

The Interdisciplinary Training Program in Rehabilitation and Neuromuscular Plasticity, funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research was initiated in 2003 to help build a critical mass of well-trained scientists prepared to conduct innovative rehabilitation research. This pre-doctoral training program is unique in that it emphasizes the interaction and joint training of rehabilitation clinicians and basic scientists with a common interest in translational research in neuromuscular plasticity.

Congratulations, Vivian!

Branden Nguyen Awarded UF APK Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship

March 2021

This APK Doctoral Fellowship is awarded to support students that show substantial promise of being research productive and could benefit from release time from teaching to further their research.

Congratulations, Branden!

Fuller and Smuder Awarded NIH R01 for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Drs. Dave Fuller and Ashley Smuder were recently awarded an NIH R01 grant to study the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) on respiratory neuromuscular recovery after spinal cord injury.  They will investigate their hypothesis that HBO, delivered in the acute phases after cervical spinal cord injury, attenuates diaphragm atrophy and dysfunction, reduces cervical spinal cord pathology, and improves respiratory neuromuscular recovery.  Dr. Smuder’s laboratory will evaluate diaphragm muscle function, and Dr. Fuller’s laboratory will evaluate neural function.
