Portraiture

A Portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.

Many artists create portraits of people that they love or that are important to them. Artists also depict people in a various poses or performing everyday tasks.

William Johnson painted images of his family and friends in his community of Florence, South Carolina in the 1940's. The portrait of "Lil' Sis" is of his niece. "Lil' Sis" and many of Johnson's images are on view at The National Portrait Gallery.

Modgilliani is known for portraits in a modern style characterized by elongation of faces and necks.

He painted images of his wife and daughter, as well as friends.

Gustav Klimt painted portraits of women with elaborate patterns and designs on their dresses and in the background.

Pablo Picasso was most well known for abstract still life paintings he created during the Cubist Movement, and artwork he created during the Blue Period. He also painted more traditional paintings like this painting of his mother. Picasso spent most of his adult life in France, and was influenced greatly by the Post-Impressionists.

Mary Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She is known for her paintings of images of women in social and private lives. Often she focused on the bond between mother and child.

Johannes Vermeer

specialized in everyday scenes of middle class life.

Henri Matisse is well known for his use of bright colors and his use of organic line and shapes in his artwork.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream, has become one of the most iconic images of world art. His work communicates a sadness or eerie feeling.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. His artwork communicates a fun and cheerful quality.

Camille Pissaro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. His images of family and animals have a kind hearted and warm feeling in them.

Rembrandt was an American painter well known for his portraits. Along with his brother Ruben Peale, Rembrandt Peale painted many of his siblings.

Jean-Honore' Fragonard painted many portraits, and is also very well known for painting images of everyday life. Fragonard painted many images of family.
