Below you’ll see how I’ve meshed some of my favorite hobbies with my interest in data visualization.
Not all of my hobbies lend themselves to clean visuals, but I try not to hold that against them. Time with my wife and kids is especially important to me. We love going on bike rides, traveling, camping, playing catch, building with legos, and baking together. I once heard that if you work with your mind, you should find ways to move your body. I’ve taken that advice to heart. During my time in Madison, I’ve completed a 50K trail race and recently finished a cross-triathlon that blends open-water swimming, mountain biking, and trail running. In the fall, I play in the Madison ultimate frisbee league, where my team has come in second place twice... and won the championship once. I also have a plot at the local community garden and take entirely too much pride in cooking meals with homegrown ingredients (anybody want a zucchini?).
I enjoy reading! I started collecting data on all the books I finished when I started the PhD program at Wisconsin.
Basketball has always been a great exercise and outlet for me. I particularly enjoy watching college basketball!

I enjoy listening to Taylor Swift (Speak Now and Red are my favorites. No, I did not make it to an Eras Tour concert). If you are at all like me, you have been curious whether Taylor's Version has been more popular than the originals. So, I created this dashboard to help answer that. As with any data, it has its problems. But hey, it was fun.
Notes: The lighter colored bars represent the original release while the darker colored bar represents Taylor's Version. All play counts come from Spotify. The plays per day field was calculate based on the date a particular album was available on Spotify. Play counts are up to date as of 11/14/2023.
Alone is a TV series where 10 individuals (or 7 pairs in the case of season 4) are dropped into a wilderness location and left with only a handful of items of their choosing (plus some additional basic personal hygiene items). This "last-person-standing" style series features a $500,000 cash prize for the remaining winner. There have been a total of 94 appearances by 84 individuals on the show (one season featured a "second-chance" attempt for prior participants). Let's take a look at how long they stayed, where they are from, what they chose to bring, and why they left.
Note: Elective reasons for leaving include any reason why an individual pulled themselves from the competition.
Compulsory reasons include any reason the appropriate medical staff decided to remove an individual from the competition.
