BACKGROUND
There are fifteen (15) Gallup McKinley County Public Elementary schools, one (1) Zuni School District Elementary School - Shiwi Ts’ana, as well as approximately ten (10) private/charter elementary schools including Rehoboth Christian School, St. Francis Assisi Elementary School, Gallup Christian School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, Zuni Christian Mission School, Wildcat Christian Academy, St. Anthony’s School, Hilltop Christian School, and Hozho Academy Charter School. There are fifteen (15) Navajo Nation Head Start sites and one (1) MID-West New Mexico Community Action Program Head Start facility. Also unique to this region are nine (9) Bureau of Indian Education Elementary Schools including the Family and Child and Education (FACE) program in Wingate, NM. There are three (3) home visiting programs operated in the region that include Navajo Nation (Tribal Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program), Northwest New Mexico First Born, and Avenues Early Childhood Services. The three Early Intervention Programs are Navajo Nation Growing in Beauty, Dungarvin, and The Therapy Academy. The Gallup McKinley County Schools Parents as Teachers Program now supports teen mothers enrolled in any of the Gallup McKinley County Middle or High Schools. The two (2) children’s homes are Manuelito Navajo Children’s Home and Gallup Christian Children’s Home. There are forty (40) home care providers and four (4) child care centers.
