The main goals of the coalition are to be led by engaged families, unite programs and organizations who work with young children and the community, ensure that efforts are not duplicated, increase awareness of existing resources to connect families, and create an advocacy and advisory group with the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department.
DEMOGRAPHICS
The geographic location of the McKinley County Early Childhood Coalition is McKinley County in the northwest region of New Mexico, bordering Arizona. The county spans 5,455 square miles and is composed of majority tribal lands (roughly 70%), including the Pueblo of Zuni and 31 Chapters in Eastern Agency of the Navajo Nation. Reflective of these geographic boundaries, the demographics of our county include 79.6% Native American, 14.2% Hispanic/Latino, 8.3% White alone (not Hispanic), 2% two or more races, 1% Asian and <1% African American. Approximately 53.4% of individuals living in the county speak another language other than English (Spanish, Zuni and Navajo predominantly).
