If you are looking to take additional classes on your own through MCC, these program are a perfect option for you! Both of these programs have classes that can help you get a jumpstart on your college degree.
CollegeNOW! classes are offered online and in-person during MCC's regular quarter schedule.
Students can take classes in the CollegeNOW program for dual credit (high school and college credit) if their high school accepts dual credit classes from MCC. To learn more, contact your MCC Navigator and your high school counselor.
KSOI classes are exclusively offered online. These classes are offered during a semester schedule to better match with local high school schedules.
All classes offered through the KSOI program are taught by NDE certified instructors, which means any of these classes could be offered as dual credit (high school and college credit) if your high school accepts dual credit from MCC. To learn more about your dual credit options, contact your MCC Navigator and your high school counselor.
Note that you do not have to take these classes for high school credit. If you want, you can just take them for college credit.
To be a successful college student, preparation is key! Follow our step-by-step guide to prepare for your classes. You can also attend a short orientation session at your high school to receive assistance logging into your MCC account and finding your books and supplies.
Make sure you are able to login to Self-Service using your MCC username and password. If you need to reset your password, call MCC's IT Helpdesk at 531-622-2900. Once you've logged into Self Service, click on the "Plan & Schedule" button to view your current schedule. This page will show all the classes for which you are currently enrolled.
If you are a new student or haven't taken classes in a while, you might need to set up Multifactor Authentication (MFA). Multifactor Authentication is used to help secure your MCC account by requiring you to confirm your identity through a third party application or source, such as a text or phone call.
For example, if you set up your Multifactor Authentication as a text message, each time you login to your MCC account from a new device, you will receive a code via text message, which you will need to enter in order to access your MCC account.
To set up Multifactor Authentication, you will need to login to Okta. Okta is the platform where you can access your account information and all the applications you have access to as an MCC student.
Once you are logged into Okta using your MCC credentials (the same login information as Self Service and Canvas), click on your profile picture in the upper right corner. Then, click "Settings."
Now, click the green "Edit Profile" button located towards the upper right corner of your screen. Note that you might need to re-enter your password. Now, you should be able to edit your profile information. Scroll down until you see the box labeled "Extra Verification."
Choose the option you wish to have as your MFA and click "Set up." Note that "SMS Authentication" is a text message.
Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up your Multifactor Authentication. If you have questions about this process, contact MCC's IT department at 531-622-2900.
Need help finding your books? You can find the books for your class through your Self Service menu or through MCC's website. If you have trouble finding the books for your class, contact your Dual Enrollment Navigator or the instructor for your class.
The ISBN number for your textbooks can be found through the MCC Bookstore or your Self Service schedule. To compare prices on different sites, simply copy the ISBN number and paste it into your favorite textbook purchasing site.
If you need financial assistance for your books and tools, reach out to your MCC Navigator (Alyssa or Nadia) for assistance.
As a college student, time management is super important. In fact, you might have heard this term and wondered what it really means. Using the right tools can help you to have better time management skills, which means you will easily be able to turn in all your assignments on time while also having time for extracurricular activities, family, and friends.
A really great way to help you manage your time is by using a planner. For college classes, you'll want to write down all your due dates for the entire class on the first day of class when you receive your syllabus. This will help you to know what assignments are due soon and when you can work ahead.
You can also add your high school assignments, appointments, games, and more to your planner.
Another popular option is to use an online calendar, like Google Calendar or Outlook. These types of calendars can sync across multiple devices, so you will have all your deadlines wherever you are. They can also connect to your email address, so you can add personal appointments, important school dates, and more!
Some students prefer to utilize an online study and focus platform, like myHomeworkApp, Trello, or Evernote to organize their schedule and assignment deadlines.
If you need help choosing from one of these options, contact your MCC Navigator.
Take a look at your weekly schedule. How much time to you have to study for your college and high school classes. Generally speaking, study time (outside of classtime if your class is in-person) for a college-level class will be credit hours x 2 - credit hours x 3. For example, if you are taking English Composition I, which is 4.5 credit hours, on an average week, you will spend 9 - 13.5 hours studying for that class.
Use a weekly schedule planner, like the one below to plan out your average week. This will help ensure that you have enough time to study for the class you are planning to take. If you don't have enough time to study, talk to your Navigator about other options.
Now that it is the first day of class, make sure you can login to Canvas and see your class! Find your syllabus, which should have all the due dates and important deadlines for the class. Record those deadlines in your time management tool.
If you have any questions about the class, reach out to your instructor. Make sure to record the last day to drop the class in your time management tool.
There are many, many wonderful resources you have access to as an MCC student, which are designed to help you succeed, regardless of if you are taking an in-person class or online class. Let your MCC Navigator know if you want to be connected to any of these resources, or complete the help form.
If you currently utilize an individual educational plan at your high school, are sick, or have suddenly been injured, Disability Support Services is an awesome resource that can give you additional support in your classes.
If you or your parents are in the military or a veteran, you have additional support in our Military & Veterans Services office.
Are you in need of some additional one-on-one academic support in your MCC classes? MCC offers free tutoring in many different areas. Tutoring is offered online and in-person at our MCC campuses.
