Microbiome sampling capsule

  • The gut microbiome is known to perform many biochemical functions in the host and to be closely related to various human diseases. In general, the intestinal microbial composition is investigated through stool analysis in the majority of gut microbiome studies. However, since intestinal microbial composition depends on the location of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, stool analysis has many limitations. On the other hand, the ingestible sampling capsules have been proposed to collect a microbial sample at a specific location inside the GI tract but only once can collect when the body is immersed in a gut fluid. To overcome the limitations of existing ingestible sampling capsules, we are interested in an active multiple sampling capsule that can be wirelessly powered by a permanent magnet and electromagnetic field control and can collect microbial samples from multiple locations in the GI tract.

Drug delivery using a magnetically actuated capsule

  • Therapeutic microneedle patches can be delivered to the target lesions in the gastrointestinal tract using a magnetically actuated capsule. Multiple therapeutic microneedle patch consist of biocompatible material and it can be delivered to two or more target lesions. The magnetically actuated capsule can move to the lesion sites accurately and rapidly using electromagnetic actuation(EMA) system. It can be a useful tool for medical treatment in the gastrointestinal tract.
