The semester project for my Machine Tool Operations class was to construct a small vise based on given part drawings and instructions. The gap in between the jaws is about 2". I made use of manual mill and lathe machines for the majority of the parts, using steel, aluminum and brass stock pieces. The jaw faceplates were made on the CNC mill as an introduction to those machines.
In the end, I didn't have to sand or adjust much to fit everything together, and the jaws opened and closed smoothly after assembly.
