The Story of Maya Lin School
Ten years ago, Maya Lin was an under-resourced school called Washington Elementary. Due to low student performance - with an enrollment of only 250 students - the school faced closure. Rather than close the campus, visionary school-site leadership partnered (via an AUSD Innovative Grant) to establish a learning community firmly rooted in arts integration and inquiry-based instruction. This commitment - of time, resources, and funding - to reimagine Maya Lin School has been an AUSD success.
Today, Maya Lin School:
Is a thriving school community with over 470 students. In fact, it is one of the few AUSD schools with increasing enrollment in 2022-23. Community members regularly share how inspired, proud and grateful they are to be part of the Maya Lin Wolf Pack!
Has a nationally recognized arts-integrated curriculum interwoven into every academic subject and after-school programming. This core program is the heart and soul of our school.
Attracts and retains strong teachers, staff, and paraprofessionals. This is largely due to school-wide practices of collaboration and professional development around arts integration.
