I like to work on multidisciplinary projects involving natural sciences and engineering challenges. Astronomy, medicine, genetics, control and smart cities are a few examples of my interests. I contribute to them from the data science and artificial intelligence disciplines, mixing fundamental theoretical results with feasible techniques and methods towards a solution. This multidisciplinary spirit can also be found in my teaching, pushing applied projects and research as early as possible in undergraduate programs. I also participate in several R&D centres and transfer initiatives because I feel the work is not done until these advances reach society.
I was born in Viña del Mar (Chile) in the 80s, so I belong to the transitioning generation between analogical to digital life. Since I learnt my first programming language at eight years old in my ATARI 65XE, I got into the mysteries of logic, data and electronic systems. I studied "Informatics Engineering" at UTFSM, a mixture of Computer Science, Information Technologies, Software Development and Information Systems, and obtained a master's degree in the same discipline. At the time, I was focused on real-time distributed systems, high-performance computing and low-level software projects such as those found in astronomical observatories. However, I've decided to study sequential decision processes and machine learning at the MAIA group in INRIA because fundamental topics puzzled me back then (and still do!), such as cognition, optimal control, information theory, complexity, etc. This led to my PhD thesis in quasi-optimal information-gathering processes, just in the middle of the fundamental theoretical frameworks for which I was intrigued. I returned to Chile in 2013 as a young researcher to strengthen the astroinformatics research and teaching area of the Informatics Department at USM. In 2019, I was hired by the Electronics Department of the same institution as a professor in the Telematics area.

1) IT26I0006 - FONDEF IT [2026-2027]
Title: “Multimodal Platform for Quantitative Cardiovascular Imaging and Hemodynamic Analysis”
Role: Co-Investigator
Description: Applied research project aimed at developing a modular and interoperable software platform for the quantitative analysis of cardiovascular medical images. The platform integrates artificial intelligence, medical image processing, and advanced hemodynamic analysis to generate quantitative biomarkers from cardiac MRI and 4D Flow MRI, with the goal of supporting more accurate and efficient clinical diagnosis. The project seeks to transition existing research algorithms into a robust, multiplatform pre-commercial solution, progressing from TRL 4 to TRL 6. As a researcher, I am responsible for technical supervision of the project, particularly the integration and communication with hospital RIS/PACS systems, contributing expertise in distributed systems and artificial intelligence.
Funding: ANID IDeA Technological Research Program.
2) DGIIP 2026 [2026-2027]
Title: “Estimation of Cardiorespiratory Digital Biomarkers from Video”
Role: Co-Investigator
Description: Technological development project aimed at estimating cardiorespiratory digital biomarkers, including heart rate and heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, from video acquired during telemedicine consultations. The project develops and validates remote photoplethysmography and related computer-vision algorithms, and packages them into a modular, interoperable platform designed for integration with telehealth systems. The project seeks to advance the technology from TRL 3 to TRL 5, including validation against clinical reference measurements and the development of a technology-transfer and business model.
Funding: UTFSM Internal Technological Development Program 2025.
3) CIA250006 - Centros de Investigación Aplicada [2025-2030]
Title: “AC3E: Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering”
Role: Principal Researcher
Description: AC3E’s main beneficiary institutions are USM, the University of Chile (UChile), and the University of Concepción (UdeC), and it currently operates within ANID’s Applied Research Centers (CIA) program. As a Principal Researcher, I lead the Computer Vision and Robotics (CVR) research line, focusing particularly on reinforcement learning, Bayesian learning, and planning for autonomous agents and robotics. I have also led international and applied research collaborations in astronomy and robotic systems for the center.
Funding: ANID’s Associative Research Program (PIA) – Basal Funding Program.
