Through the creation of this game, I exhibited one of my deepest fears in regards to the relationship between AI and women. Having watched it exacerbate the sexual and psychological violence exercised on women, I can only wish for a future where AI is no longer taught gender bias. For now, I can only highlight what I fear most; real stories and traumas that other women and girls have lived through. All in hopes you understand where my fear comes from.
This game represents real stories of women and girls and the impact AI had on them, because I need you to understand this is happening right now. These people are real; now you can experience what they felt like in those moments.
This is not just about AI. This is about feminism; about ending violence against women on the basis of gender. If we cannot take care of sexism in our own societies and transmit it to machines without thinking twice, we are taking a step backwards in term of women’s rights and safety. AI needs to be taught feminism, equality and nonviolence.
I hope this exhibition leaves you wondering how AI could be modified to think about women. I hope it leaves you thinking of the young girls, the actresses, the women whose exes wanted revenge, and the thousands of other women who have had Deepfakes of them posted to social media. I hope you walk away wondering, “How could we have let this happen?”
