What is Maude's Diary and Why Was It Created?
I decided to create Maude's Diary to highlight the sexism our society has taught AI and how it could greatly affect us in the long run.
Specifically, this project focuses on Deepfakes and their effects on young girls when they are used as a revenge or as a sexist way to “prank” them. The game consists of an interactive "diary controller," which is supposed to represent the diary of a fourteen year old girl named Maude. The player has to interact with the diary in some way to trigger a story Maude wrote about in her diary to be read. Maude starts out very happy, but begins to become sadder and sadder, until the player learns that Maude has had Deepfakes posted of her online by classmates at school. The game ends with showing that these types of stories are true with sources, research, and parts of my manifesto included in the physical "diary controller."
This game came to life because I, as a woman, sometimes fear what could happen to me and to others knowing the disgusting amusement some people get from sexualizing women and possibly ruining their lives, careers or self-esteems by posting them in fake sexual situations.
This game directly relates to my manifesto, as a huge part of it is dedicated to Deepfakes and how women are victimized by them. I focused on the story of high school girls who had Deepfakes posted of them by classmates on social media, and my game’s story is getting at that exact theme.

How this Project Progressed
When pitching this project, I was absolutely determined to create a game with the use of the Unity software and to create an interactive "diary controller" with the use of an Arduino board. I coded for hours... for all of my files to be corrupted, and my computer to be unable to run the software necessary to make Arduino work within Unity.
I changed plans and decided to use the Arduino to show quotes from my manifesto and a solution to AI's sexism problem. I did so because I truly wanted to keep the Arduino component in my project. For the "diary controller" and the game itself, I began using a Makey Makey and Google Slides, which kept me from worrying that my files would get corrupted again.
From then on, it was pretty straighforward: the Arduino's wiring and coding was already mostly done; I just changed some lines of code to show the quotes.
I created and animated the Google Slides game, then added audio.
Finally, I wrote Maude's messages for the diary, printed them on the pages, decorated the diary, and added the Makey Makey components.
