I took on this project while in one of my technical writing classes at Cal Poly. We were each tasked with creating a proposal for any project that interested us. Once it was presented and approved we created either a recommendations report, a feasibility report, or a combination of both for our proposed project. My report investigates the feasibility of installing a spa unit in the Poly Canyon Village (PCV) pool area on the Cal Poly campus. I started out by researching the potential health concerns and health benefits that could come with owning a spa. Following this, I conducted a study centered around Cal Poly PCV residents. I surveyed the community’s pool usage, spa interest, desire to use the area more if it had a spa, and if residents would be willing to pay a small amount of money to contribute to such a spa. Next, I researched the two main types of spas, above-ground and in-ground, and compared the information given for each. From this, it was determined that an in-ground spa would be best suited for the area. After determining the spa type, I dove into SLO County’s spa and pool codes and regulation. After cross referencing these codes with the current pool area dimensions, two potential spa locations were determined. While comparing the two, the location to the right side of the pool was chosen. Finally, I took a deeper look at Cal Poly’s annual budgets and its annual endowment report to determine if there were sufficient funds for the project. A student funded option was also proposed, and a final payment plan of action was formulated.
