Welcome to 8th Grade Math! We are so glad you are here.Â
You will find that 8th Grade Math is essentially a pre-algebra course. Our focus is on moving from numerical thinking to algebraic thinking. We will start the year by looking at transformations of figures, both on and off of a graph, and how they can create either congruent or similar figures. After learning about congruent and similar figures, a big focus will be on linear relationships. Using transformations, we can move from proportional graphs (7th grade) to linear graphs (8th grade). Within this study, we will be graphing lines, writing equations linear equations, systems of equations. We will spend some time solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign, in order to explore situations with one solution, no solution, or infinite solutions. This is our first look at functions, a topic that will show up throughout high school. We will wrap up our learning about linear functions with a unit on data that includes building an understanding of linear and nonlinear data that will give students an introduction to some other graphs that will show up again in high school algebra. Toward the end of the year we will start to look at things that are not quite as predictable as linear equations. We will talk about irrational numbers, start to develop and understanding of exponent properties, work with numbers written in scientific notation, and learn to use the Pythagorean Theorem. While 6th grade math, and often 7th grade math, can feel like an extension of elementary math, this course is much more algebraic. All of the skills we work through are foundational for success in Algebra and beyond.
