A question from my old Advanced Level Pure Mathematics text book I used way back in 1962. This question caused me much tribulation for five days before I finally reached the following solution. My approach and careless mistakes in writing made it much more difficult than need be, but is not the answer always easy once you have reached the solution.Â
One lesson I continually learn is to be neat, methodical and organised because otherwise simple transcription errors can lose you hours. This is not quite as important as carefully reading the question, many an hour can be spent answering the wrong question.
One day was lost simply because I missed off the last 'c' in equation (5).
There are a few decisive moments in the workings, such as the place where I made the note "2a = a+a" where I split the equation and made a substitute for one of the "a".
