Our workflow includes obtaining, cleaning and using data that concerns our beloved town. We started by using newspaper partnerships and social media to publish, but recently we have turned to web applications in attempt to make the data more interactive, centralized and reachable.
Obtaining data
Gathering data can be a difficult task in a medium sized not so technological Brazilian town. In most cases, we obtain data from National Statistics Institutes like IBGE or Ipea. In quite a few scenarios a little more effort is required though: we've developped web scraping techniques to gather the cities' data on COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths and on lawmakers work ahead of the city council as they were not previously available.
Transforming and making it available
We turn unitidy it into tidy data and then we make it available at our GitHub webpage. Seems simple and in many cases it is, we did have to create a large scale regex to better identify COVID deaths as there were 8 different genders (e.g. "Old man", "Woman", "Women").
Creating data visualizations
Finally, we use Flourish to create beautiful data visualizations which will be published in our social media platforms and on our partner newspaper, Tribuna de Minas. You can find us on social media and start learning about our town! We have a Twitter and an Instagram account. The posts are in portuguese as we ideally reach the cities citizens.
Creating webapplications
More recently, we decided to launch our own webapplications where users can explore data about our city. Our first application concerns the lawmakers effectiviness, one of our first original projects.
Through R and Python, we have shown, among other projects:
The effectiveness of the city’s lawmakers work: https://jfemdados.netlify.app/
A complete coverage of the cities’ COVID-19 causalities and vaccination efforts;
A thorough analysis of the cities’ schools and how they vary in terms of racial composition and academic performance;
Pollutant gases emission in Juiz de Fora and nearby cities;
Dengue fever cases and framed along pluviometric measures ;
Vaccination maps concerning nearby cities and the whole Minas Gerais state
Politics and administration
Councilman Sargento Mello Casal's projects overlook. Mr Mello gained popularity during lockdowns as he claimed they were not necessary. He was also the second least effective lawmaker in our scores.
Voting for women mayors in Juiz de Fora. We mapped how many of the total amount of votes were directed at candidates that are women. There is a noticeable increase since 2008, the first time a woman ran for office. In 2020, Margarida Salomão was the first woman to be elected mayor in the city.
Impact of Bills presented by each councilman. The green part of the bar represents projects that are not in the following categories: renaming streets or buildings, granting honorary citizenship and festive dates creation.
Impact overview considering all Bills presented from 2017 to 2020. Almost half of them fall into what we called "not relevant": they concern street and buildings' names, festive dates and honorary citizenships.
Education
Number of students per class in public schools for different size-comparable cities in the state. Juiz de Fora ranks reasonably well among these cities, having in 3/4 the least number of students.
Average grade on the National Exam for Highschoolers on the y axis confronts the percentage of black students among total students in the schools of Juiz de Fora. There is a clear between these two realities and public policy must take that into account. Red balls represent public schools whilst public schools are represented in blue, yet another huge gap between such groups.
Health issues and covid-19
Vaccination map for Juiz de Fora and nearby cities on the left and for the whole Minas Gerais state on the right. The maps show the cities that more efficiently vaccinated their citizens as the vaccines arrived. Greener areas used a higher percentage of the vaccines they received while red areas did not. Both maps give us some idea of the vaccination geography whilst also hinting on the data quality: many some cities registered more than 100% of used vaccines out of the received ones, a likely mistake in the dataset.
Covid deaths and vaccination thresholds in the city of Juiz de Fora. The data shows the death by Covid moving average in red and different moments in the vaccination campaign, from the beggining of the vaccination process, to the moment we reached 76% fully vaccinated. A medical team who also contributed in the newspaper atributted the drop in deaths to the vaccination progress. On the left, dengue fever cases and pluviometry in the city. The disease often correlates with higher amounts of rain, we teamed up with a tropical disease lab from the local university to study that a little more in depth.
Environment
Pollutant emissions in Juiz de Fora and comparable size cities in the state. Juiz de Fora had to switch to carbon fueled energy during mid 2010s as the city went through a hydric crisis. This can be seen in the graphic as "JF" gains the lead on total pollution emission per habitant, among same size cities in Minas Gerais.
