My research interests center around issues of equity, access, and power structures occurring in undergraduate STEM programs with a focus on introductory mathematics courses.
Current Research Focus
The experiences of sexually minoritized (LGBTQIA) undergraduate STEM students and interrogates the mathematics discourses related to sexual identity and gender identity.
Department culture and systemic change to foster equitable, inclusive, and active learning teaching strategies in introductory STEM courses.
Alternative course pathways (course variations) and programs to support diversity in undergraduate calculus programs.
The role of technology, instructional design, and computer programing to broaden participation by infusing culturally relevant pedagogy.
I earned my PhD in Mathematics and Science Education through the joint doctoral program at San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego under the supervision of my Chris Rasmussen. I completed my Masters in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Mathematics Education at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. I spent my undergraduate education at Saint John's University / College of Saint Benedict in Collegeville Minnesota. During that time I obtained a dual bachelors in Mathematics and Psychology, and studied algebraic geometry with Dr. Kris Nairn. After graduating I spent several years in industry as a Software Engineer and Senior IT Training Specialist focusing on Java related technologies and e-learning development. My passion for education and mathematics brought me back into academia to explore math education at the college level.
My passions revolve around education and teaching. I also enjoy hiking, cooking, and watching TV. When I have to be inside I enjoy strategy board games (Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Pandemic, and so many more!) and acting like a kid by watching cartoons (Avatar the Last Air-Bender). Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments or just want to talk math education!
