The Department of Mathematics was started in the year 1968-69 as one of the earliest departments of Bharathi Women's College with the course B.Sc. Mathematics (English and Tamil medium). M.Sc Applicable Sciences was started in the year 1995 under the self-financing scheme which was later converted as M.Sc. Applicable Mathematics in the academic year 2002 - 03. Later it was converted to M.Sc. Mathematics in the year 2009-10 for the purpose of higher education and employment of the students with a sanctioned strength of 26. B.Sc. Mathematics Shift II was introduced in the academic year 2007- 08 with a sanctioned strength of 36 students.
The Department consists of well-qualified, dedicated, and experienced faculty members to handle both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. There are 12 faculty members with 10 doctorates, 2 pursuing Ph.D. and 1 with NET qualification. Five guest lecturers are appointed to handle the Shift II courses of which one is pursuing Ph.D.
Currently, there are 51 students in M.Sc Mathematics, 201 students in Shift I and 79 students in Shift II of B.Sc Mathematics. All of them are admitted according to the Government norms based on merit and quota. The students are accommodated in spacious and ventilated classrooms.
Once in three years, the syllabus is revised in accordance with the syllabus given by the University of Madras and approved by the Board of Studies and the Academic Council of this Autonomous Institution. The syllabus revision was done in 2019 as per the instructions received from TANSCHE.
For undergraduates, the allied subjects offered are Physics/Numerical methods and Mathematical Statistics. For postgraduates, the Supportive electives offered are Tensor Analysis and Formal Languages and Automata. The students are given training in C - language at the undergraduate level and PYTHON language at the postgraduate level. Fuzzy sets and their applications is offered as an application-oriented paper.
Meritorious students are rewarded with endowment prizes instituted by our former professors which have motivated them to excel very well in their studies. Students are encouraged by various means both from the Government and the non-Government organizations. Lion’s club and the Rotary club help the poor students by lending textbooks through the department. Students are also helped by both state and central government scholarships. Twenty-nine students are receiving National Scholarships. Slow learners are encouraged and special care is given to them through remedial classes which are sponsored by the UGC and the State Government. Internship programs and Extension activities are carried out by students.
Our faculty members actively participate in various conferences, seminars and workshops to update their knowledge and meet various experts in the field. They are also encouraged and permitted to present papers. Two of our staff members, Dr. Joice Punitha M and Dr. S.Lavanya have been involved in research activities. Under their guidance 11 have completed and 3 are pursuing Ph.D.
Dr. S. Nirmala is a recipient of the Dr. Radhakrishnan Teaching Excellence Award from The International Association of Awards - LIONS CLUBS in 2018. Dr. S. Lavanya received the Research Excellence Award from the Institute of Scholars in 2020.
For the Study abroad programme, four of the II M.Sc. (2012-2014 and 2013 – 2015) students were selected by Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education in collaboration with British Council and the students completed the programme successfully.
(i) Ms.Sangeetha.M did her 3rd Semester in ‘’Royal Holloway-University of London’’, United Kingdom.
(ii) Ms.Priya.D did her 3rd Semester in ‘’University of Birmingham’’, United Kingdom.
(iii) Ms. Emmimal Rajathy.R did her final semester in ‘’King’s College -University of London’’- United Kingdom.
(iv) Ms. Swathi. Y.S did her third semester in “University of Leicester”, London.
Our Mathematics Association organizes programmes with eminent resource persons from various colleges on applications of Mathematics to our students. The association also conducts interdepartmental competitions for students. Students are also helped to participate in various competitions conducted by our own institution and other institutions to showcase their talents and to bring confidence in them.
