In 2024, there were 509 mass shootings. This was my first year working on this project, so I was unaware that incidents would be added to or removed from the Gun Violence Archive if the number of victims changed. The number of victims can increase if the suspected shooter is found to be another innocent victim or decrease if a victim is discovered to be the shooter. Because of this, and other human errors, the scarf only has 494 rows. 

It measures at 10 feet and 2 inches. It weighs 1 pound, 1.2 ounces. 

There are nine beaded rows, which are mass shootings that took place inside of or heavily related to schools. 

The 2024 scarf only tracks the number of deaths per mass shooting incident. Each row is one mass shooting that took place in the United States between January 1st and December 31st, 2024. 

The color key pictured shows what each color means. Grey is a mass shooting in which no one died. Yellow is a mass shooting with 1 or 2 deaths. Orange is a mass shooting with 3, 4, or 5 deaths. Red is a mass shooting with 6, 7, or 8 deaths. Lastly, there are no black rows, but that color was there for 9 or more deaths.
