Service- This regiment saw action at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. The regiment fought at the Battle of Shiloh and many men were captured as prisoners of war. Shiloh was the bloodiest battle fought on the American continent to that date. The Second Iowa was awarded the Post of Honor for their bravery at both Ft. Donelson and at Shiloh.

The Second Iowa was part of the Army of the Tennessee and served under Generals Grant and Sherman. They fought at Corinth, Mississippi, and were engaged in the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia. After the victory of the Fall of Atlanta -- in September, 1864, Sherman decided to fight an all-out war, by striking at the morale of the civilian populace. The intent was to save lives in the long run. Sherman set out from Atlanta on a March to the Sea heading for Savannah, Georgia - 300 miles away. The battle hardened troops, 62,000 strong, marching in two wings -- set out on foot -- cutting themselves off from supplies and communications. On December 21, 1864, the Union troops under General William T. Sherman reached Savannah.

On January 28, 1865, Sherman’s Army set out on a March through the Carolinas. They fought at the Battle of Bentonville, NC. This battle was the largest battle ever fought on NC soil. On March 24, 1865, Sherman’s troops reached Goldsboro, NC; four days less than two months since having left Savannah. They had marched 500 miles through enemy territory, with thousands of the troops hobbling along with bare feet, bleeding and sore, and wrapped in pieces of blanket. (Regimental Notes).

On April 26, 1865, the regiment participated in the largest surrender of the Civil War at Bennett’s Cabin in Durham, NC. The troops then made their final march to Washington, DC and participated in the Grand Review. After mustering out of the Army with an honorable discharge, August Lange came to Watertown, MN. He settled on Oak Lake on the east side of town where he farmed the rest of his life. August was a Charter member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and is buried in the St. Peter’s cemetery.
