In Creative Marketing Design, I collaborated with a partner to work with a nonprofit organization and redesign their brand identity. My partnership was grateful for Blue Ridge CASA's dedication towards hands-on learning by allowing us to redesign their Mustaches 4 Kids event. At the conclusion of the semester, we delivered a professional rebranding package aligning with their mission, values and audience.
The first step of this project was conducting a brand audit and strategy document. This consisted of research on the current branding, a SWOT analysis, and reflecting on current visual elements of the brand.
Secondly, we redesigned a visual identification system for the client. Visual elements we developed were a new logo, color palette, typography and style usage. A challenge for my group particularly was integrating the national-level branding of CASA, which cannot be altered, while redesigning a specific event for the Blue Ridge location. We were careful to follow the national branding and still include our own creative touches for visually distinguishing both the event and the recognizable CASA brand.
The next step of the project focused on creating marketing collateral and digital marketing mockups. I thoroughly enjoyed creating digital assets on Canva and Adobe for a nonprofit client and am passionate to explore similar work in my career.
Finally, we developed a community outreach idea and presented a 10-15 minute pitch to our class. After the semester was over, we were guided to send the documents to Blue Ridge CASA for their own use if deemed fit. Peer feedback was given at the conclusion of the project as well to constructively critique the design and impact.
Overall, this project was a notable experience to work with a real client in a nonprofit industry. I found working with CASA to be personally inspiring since my mother was a Court Appointed Special Advocate for a number of years.
I acquired skills in visual editing and document styling to create marketing materials using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. For each platform, I followed the chapter projects, completed in-class quick create assignments, and developed projects using the tools I learnt. Through these projects, I strengthened my creative problem solving skills, developed portfolio materials, gained experience receiving and providing constructive feedback, and practiced file management with exporting in various formats such as PDF, Adobe and Print.

My favorite Adobe platforms were Illustrator and InDesign. The projects I enjoyed the most in Illustrator were developing icons for Instagram story highlights, redesigning an album cover, and bringing to life a new character for a brand of choice. Illustrator allowed me to express my creativity in new ways by providing the tools necessary to potray new ideas. Originally, I struggled to learn the workspace, but by the end of the course I felt confident to transfer these skills into my career.
All projects for InDesign related to producing print or web materials, which I highly enjoyed. One project was to recreate our resume using more color and visual design. My professional resume can be downloaded here. Additionally, I enjoyed developing a brand style guide and nonprofit branded brochure in InDesign for the rebranding project. I love detail-oriented tasks and utilizing my organization skills to produce professional documents. I am passionate about branding and keeping consistent elements throughout various integrated promotional media.
At the conclusion of the course, I placed all projects into a comprehensive portfolio using InDesign.
