Our specie of interest
Gongolaria barbata
(also referred as Treptacantha barbata)
G.barbata is a canopy-forming brown alga from the family of the Sargassaceae listed as “of community interest” according to the Habitat Directive (92/43/EEC) and an indicator of environmental quality in Mediterranean coastal waters according to the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC).
Why is important to restore these species?
Characterised by a ramified monopodial cauloid and a dendroid frond , this species is a perennial alga thus, providing its three-dimensional structure the whole year (Falace et al., 2006). This is essential since it ensures food sources, substrata for settlement and shelter for many smaller algae, invertebrates, and fish. From the ecological point of view, they provide oxygen and sustain the entire food web securing that the ecosystem is fully functioning and healthy.
