On numerous occasions, the biology and ecology of the target species of a restoration project are barely known which may represent a difficulty while designing an adequate and effective restoration method. Therefore, before going to the next step, we tried to find out more about the seasonal patterns of Gongolaria barbata by monitoring its growth throughout time and studying the fertility and maturity of the different tagged individuals.
Vegetative study
In three different sites, Piscinetta, Scalinatta and Scalaccia, the growth of tagged and random individuals is monitored monthly to detect seasonal patterns, compare the differences between sites and understand how the environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures affect the growth of the studied populations.
Reproductive study
Apart from measuring the height of the algae, during the same surveys, a few receptacles of each individual are picked to determine its fertility at that moment. This allows us to know which is the optimal time of the year for collecting the receptacles that will be used in the restoration actions,
