News Angle is the journalist's perspective on an event or case. This perspective technically determines the writing of the headline and the lead or the first paragraph of a news article.
"The angle is the point or theme of a news or feature story. The angle is found in the lead of the the story."
Other terms for News Angle are News Peg, News Hook, Story Hook. It all leads to the understanding of the main point of the news, the topic or current event, or the situation that holds news value.
Every media outlet or journalist has a different news angle, but it can also be the same. However, if you encounter different news with the same source, it is due to differences in the news perspective. So, the news angle will differentiate the content of the news between one media outlet and another. The events may be the same, but due to the difference in news angles, the content and message of the news will be different.
Journalists have the freedom to determine the news angle according to the "journalistic ideology" they adhere to and their level of faith.
However, the news angle is largely controlled, influenced, or determined by the editorial policy of the media outlet where the journalist works.
The practical understanding of editorial policy is the guidelines set by media management regarding the news that can and cannot be published.
The news angle determines the headline and lead of a news article.
The headline is usually a summary of the lead, and the lead is a summary of the body or content of the news.
An easy way to write headlines and leads is by using the 5W+1H elements.
The 5W elements are most commonly included in the lead of the news.
The elements "Who" and "What" often appear in the headline.
Being a reporter requires a wide range of responsibilities. You may be the face of a news station, a regular contributor to a magazine or newspaper, or your own brand of news sourcing through tweeting and blogging. If any of this sounds appealing to you, it may be your future with a little hard effort.
Improve communication skills.
Read, watch, and follow the news.
Keep a notebook and/or a journal.
Strive for accuracy and neutrality in any story you report.
Begin a story with who, what, where, why, and how.
Start locally.
Attend events.
Go to work for school newspaper or a small, local paper.
Obtain a press pass.
Carry a camera and a tape recorder.
If you're serious about journalism, consider doing citizen journalism. Have a blog or a podcast. Write for WikiNews or another Wiki.
Don't be afraid of "small" stories, especially at first. They are good practice reporting, and they will help you establish your reputation.
Interviewing sources and gathering information for articles is an essential requirement for journalism positions. A journalist interview is a conversation between a journalist and a source on a given subject or issue. Understanding how to conduct an effective interview provides the foundation for gaining useful information and insight from a variety of sources.
How to Do an Interview?
Do your research. Read newspapers, magazines, the internet, etc.
Create equality during the interview. Don't belittle yourself, stay polite.
Prepare pointers, not numbering.
Control the interviewee. Don't get out of focus on the topic being discussed.
Don't be arrogant.
Ask briefly and clearly.
To get in-depth information and answers, ask questions with 5W+1H, not yes/no question, except for affirmations.
Don't nod your head too often.
Don't show pointers, be natural.
Capture the interviewee's eye line.
REVIEW
We gained a lot of new knowledge and materials during this meeting. Not only about writing news in general, but we also discussed every little detail, including the news value and news angle. Apart from that, we also know how to be good reporters by understanding the preparation before we report news. We also know how to do a journalism interview between the reporter and the source, because it is not easy at all.
As someone who has been interested in journalism since I was in school, this meeting gave me so much insight that is beneficial and helpful. I hope that in the future I will be able to write good news that will be consumed by the public. Also, I hope that by writing this, I will also understand how to be a good reporter by writing and reporting important news that is helpful and informative for everyone.
