Welcome to the Town of Hempstead’s Marine Nature Study Area (MNSA), a 52-acre sanctuary dedicated to the preservation, study, and appreciation of Long Island’s vital tidal wetland ecosystems. Established on the inaugural Earth Day in 1970, the MNSA serves as a "living laboratory," providing a pristine environment where the community can observe the complex dynamics of the salt marsh, estuary, and sand dune habitats.
Situated at 500 Slice Drive in Oceanside, NY our facility is bordered by Middle Bay and Bedell Creek, offering a critical refuge for indigenous wildlife and a key stopover for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway.
As you traverse our mile-long network of elevated boardwalks and trails, you will encounter the foundational species of our wetlands, such as saltmarsh cordgrass, and observe the diverse fauna that depend on this "nursery of the sea," including the diamond-back terrapin, the majestic Osprey, and various species of herons and egrets. Following the significant restoration efforts necessitated by Superstorm Sandy, our new state-of-the-art interpretive center stands as a model of flood-resilient design and environmental education.
Managed by the Department of Conservation and Waterways, the MNSA remains committed to its mission of conservation and public outreach, inviting you to witness the enduring beauty and ecological significance of New York’s coastal heritage.
