Threats to the Coral Reefs

CORAL BLEACHING: Coral bleaching is an issue due to climate change from rising ocean temperatures. These higher temperatures are putting more stress on the coral reefs causing them to lose their pigment and bleach white. This rise in temperature also causes algae to die off. Without the algae, the coral loses a vital source of food and becomes more susceptible to disease and death. Coral bleaching is a serious threat to the health and survival of coral reefs, which provide crucial habitats for many marine species and play an essential role in the ocean's ecosystem.

INVASIVE SPECIES: Recently, an invasive species of animal, the Red Lion-fish, originally native to the Indo-Pacific region has been attacking the Atlantic and Carribean Sea. They have venomous spines and no natural predators in their new habitat, which makes them an incredible threat to the ecosystem. The lionfish population has exploded in recent years, causing damage to coral reefs and reducing populations of native fish. Efforts are being made to control the spread of lionfish, including state sanctioned hunts and promotion of eating Lion-fish. However, the lionfish's ability to reproduce quickly and survive in a wide range of environments makes it a challenging species to manage.
