The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) in Horizon 2020 

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) are part of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research funding scheme and aim to support the career development and training of researchers – with a focus on innovation skills – in all scientific disciplines through international and intersectoral mobility.

In particular, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (IF) aim to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers, wishing to diversify their individual competence in terms of skill acquisition through advanced training, international and intersectoral mobility. Individual Fellowships provide opportunities to acquire and transfer new knowledge and to work on research and innovation in a European context (EU Member States and Associated Countries) or outside Europe. They develop the careers of individual researchers who show great potential, considering their experience, and include a specific opportunity for those returning to the profession.

The action also includes a mechanism for the return and reintegration of researchers from outside Europe who have previously worked there. Support is foreseen for individual, transnational fellowships awarded to the best or most promising researchers of any nationality for employment in EU Member States or Associated Countries. It is based on an application made jointly by the researcher and the beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sectors.

Global Fellowships start with a significant outgoing period spent at a partner organisation outside of Europe, and conclude with a mandatory return phase in Europe. All Individual Fellowships are expected to strengthen the contact network of both the researcher and the host organisation(s), to catalyse the development of researcher’s career, and to enhance and maximise their contribution to the knowledge-based economy and society.
