Getting Started

Here are the suggested steps once you have opened up the stats spreadsheet. If you have a question about one of the Google Sheets commands, check out the tabs on this Google Sheets Tips page.

Duplicate Sheets

There are tabs at the bottom of the sheet for the previous tournaments. Click on the grey triangle next to a year you would like to work with, and select 'duplicate' from the drop-down. Duplicating a sheet will allow you to make changes and play with ideas without losing the original data

Sort # of Tournament Wins

In the column labeled 'Number of Tournament Wins', click the green triangle, and select "Sort Z->A". The purpose of this is to sort the teams according to the number of wins they had. Remember, 'Number of Tournament Wins' can not be used in the algorithm because that is what we are trying to predict for this year!

Compare Wins with Stats

Notice how the other columns sort along with the main column, so you can see what teams are at the top and their stats. Scroll across the spreadsheet to view what stats the winning teams did well on, taking note of what you would like to use in your algorithm.

Compare Stats with Wins

The other way to use the sort function is on a specific stat. After seeing some stats you think you like, choose a stat to sort and see if the teams at the top had a lot of wins. Both strategies allow you to narrow down your selections. Check out the Desmos tab to see how to compare stats visually by graphing!

Filter Out Teams

Another strategy to utilize in an algorithm is a filter. For example, if you do not want to include Cinderella teams, click on the green triangle in the column header, and uncheck "1", leaving only "0" (the non-Cinderella teams). This can be done for any stat on the spreadsheet.
