The largest VR platform for healthcare in Europe, Sync VR Medical is also branching into creating games for patients needing physiotherapy rehabilitation.
The core concept of all the games is to help make patients rehabilitation more fun and less monotone, thus "Gamifying" the rehabilitation. It encompasses rehabilitations for: elderly people to keep active, for post operation patients, for patients recovering from a broken bone, and more.
Sync VR has multiple “teams” that each specialize in different parts of the company. The team I am part of is called Team Fit, which is the team that specializes in the physiotherapy exercises.
The internship encompasses 3 different projects, henceforth referred to as Phase 1, 2 and 3:
Phase 1 consisted of an exercise to acquaint ourselves with the existing code base. The exercise was to improve upon a previously created "Fit" game, with little to no requirements on what "improvements" consisted as.
Phase 2 comprised of creating our own game with a rehabilitation exercise as the core mechanic of the game. The current games are limited by the VR Headset controllers, which have to be held with the hand, therefore there are no games involving leg or knee exercises. One of the conditions of the product is that the physiotherapy exercise should be a leg or knee exercise, moreover it should be for bedridden patients.
Phase 3 consists of implementing an idea which I pitched during the early stages of Phase 1: creating a tutorial for each game in order to show players the proper way of doing the exercise.
Will a tutorial animation of a humanoid figure correctly doing the exercise be enough to teach every type of player(patient) how to correctly exercise, while playing our SyncVR Fit physiotherapy VR games?
Phase 3:
Design a tutorial animation manager that runs for every SyncVR Fit exercise while also being able to teach every type of patient how to properly do the exercise required in the SyncVR Fit game.
Phase 2:
Design a VR Exercise Game to help bedridden patients, in different types of hospital care, exercise their lower body while playing thus reducing the monotones of their rehabilitation and disconnecting them from the hospital setting.
As the title suggests Window Wiper is a physiotherapy VR game for bedridden patients to exercise their hips/legs without using their hands.
A tutorial system was created for all the existing games in the SyncVR Fit App. This required a re-work to the main ExerciseManager control script, a new TutorialManager script and multiple animations for each different exercise / game.
