I have mentored 5 students with the directed reading program here at the University of Minnesota. Over the course of a semester, I meet weekly with my mentee and guide their reading on a topic of their choosing. Engaging with people who are passionate about math is a lot of fun, so if you are an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota and would like to participate in the program, please indicate your interest here.
The Mathematics Center for Educational Programs at UMN organizes Enrichment classes for students in grades 5-7. Volunteering with the program is rewarding because the students are excited about math and because I can experiment with different teaching styles without the pressure of a typical classroom. For more information, see their website.
In July 2024, I volunteered with Girls Excel In Math, a summer enrichment program for girls in 4th through 6th grade. The three day long camp offers girls a chance to grow mathematically with hands-on activities like learning how to cut a hole out of a piece of paper that's big enough to walk through, encode secret messages, and talk about what it means to fairly divide something.
