Manu Endemic Lodge & Reserve
Manu Endemic Lodge & Reserve
In 1984, Don Teodocio was the first Gilahuanco to set foot in the forests of Pillcopata, east of Cusco. He had a bold vision for a new life in a land that offered few alternatives. His wife and lifelong companion, Doña Francisca, shared his vision, and their daughter Gloria joined them on this difficult but rewarding journey.
When the valuable timber ran out and the forest began to show serious signs of depletion, workers in the vulnerable logging industry had no choice but to change their trade or return home. The Gilahuancos, however, responded with determination and courage. Around 1997, they entered the hospitality industry, and since 2010, under SERFOR Resolution No. 105-2016, they have served as guardians of the “Gallito de las Rocas” conservation concession: 9,907.28 hectares of primary forest in the highlands of Pillcomayo Chico and Chontachaka, the source of the water that sustains these valleys.
We are local residents with extensive experience and a lifetime of knowledge of the Amazon. We are passionate about ecology and about protecting the environment we call home. This passion inspires us to share our knowledge and give visitors the opportunity to experience the wonders of our surroundings. With this purpose, we established Manu Endemic Lodge & Reserve.
The materials used in our infrastructure and the food we serve are sourced from neighbouring communities. Our team includes local residents with deep knowledge of the forest and its wildlife, as well as young scientists whose ecological and socioeconomic research, conducted at the lodge and in the surrounding area, we actively support.
