Prices are operational signals that emerge from an allocation mechanism. In capitalism, prices tend to reflect expected returns because agents value resources according to their contribution to profit. This convergence is neither natural nor necessary: it is the result of a specific institutional design. The market does not “discover” values; it functionally manufactures them to execute an allocation algorithm.
This mechanism is surprisingly effective, given the complexity of the problem, but effective in a certain sense. The system optimizes what it measures, and what it measures is profitability, not attention to human needs. The logic that makes it work —profit maximization under competition— is not oriented toward satisfying human needs, but rather toward the reproduction of the system itself. In a competitive environment, agents who pursue other goals are displaced. Even an idealized capitalism, without abuses or privileges, structurally tends toward a dehumanized dynamic in which human beings are treated as just another input, replaceable by machines or artificial intelligence if that proves profitable.
This tendency is not an accident: it is an endogenous property of the mechanism. The shift from a model in which production is subordinated to consumption (PM1) to one in which the reproduction of capital is imposed as an autonomous end (PM2) is the logical outcome of competition.
Furthermore, the capitalist mechanism presents other structural problems: waste (unemployment), instability (economic crises), neglect of global objectives (climate change), inequality (between individuals, between countries), concentration of economic power (monopolies, oligopolies). The institutions that mitigate all these effects —the welfare state, labor rights, redistribution— do not emerge from the market: they correct it from the outside, and their permanence is not guaranteed.
Real socialism failed because it attempted to replace the mechanism without a functional alternative to solve the economic problem. Total planning demands information, calculation, and execution capacity that exceed what is possible in complex systems. And administrative economics did not achieve efficient pricing and accounting.
The welfare state can partially humanize the allocation of resources, but it can also maintain inefficiencies. Furthermore, having only consolidated in some developed countries, it must overcome global competition. Under current conditions, its continuity is uncertain and it cannot be considered a long-term solution.
The problem of economic calculation is not logical, but practical. However, this does not imply that capitalism is the only possible alternative, but rather that every viable system needs a real allocation algorithm, with values and accounting consistent with its objectives.
The conclusion is inescapable: every economy implements an algorithm. The crucial question is not market or plan, but what objective the mechanism optimizes, what values it generates, what accounting it uses, and what type of society it reproduces. A system that uses the market and competition without modification, or that uses profit values and accounting, will tend to reproduce the same results as capitalism. But a different economy is conceivable if mechanisms are designed that, without abandoning decentralization and local information, direct allocation toward human ends.
The central task of contemporary economics is not to defend or condemn inherited systems, but to design alternative economic mechanisms as operational as the market, but not blind to human ends. Understanding the economy as an algorithm does not dehumanize it: it allows us, for the first time, to take responsibility for its design.
