The Mani Laboratory, housed in the Chanin Building (Inset), at the Departments of Medicine, Genetics and Pharmacology and The Cancer Institute and Einstein-Mount Sinai Diabetes Research Center of The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, INC has an open position for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to be part of an expanding research program on novel aspects of the mammalian microbiome.
Laboratory Research Focus and Expertise: The laboratory is focused on the study of orphan nuclear receptors, specifically the Pregnane X Receptor (PXR), that recognize xenobiotics (and endobiotics) as ligands and their effects on mammalian physiology and pathophysiology. Recently, we have shown that microbial metabolites can serve as ligands for such receptors (Immunity, 2014). In more recent work, in the study of these microbial ligands, we devised a biofilm assay that allowed for identification of new and novel bacterial species/strains from the enteric microbiota. The goal now is to study all aspects of the importance of these species to host physiology and pathophysiology (inflammation, cancer). These studies will include delving into the mechanisms of host-microbe (and microbe-host) interactions. Related research can expand to study of the mechanisms of bacterial biofilms using both genetic, biochemical and biophysical approaches.
