An episodic visual novel series, and a relatively well-known one at that. There was one time (during 2021-2022) I came across a Japanese list of top 50 VNs that people considered as the best in the medium in Japan, and surprisingly 9-nine Episode 4 is among them (around top 40). So I think it’s safe to say that despite being a new IP, the series stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the greatest VNs out there. Give this series a try. It starts off a little weak but gets better as thing goes on.
9-nine-ここのつここのかここのいろ
Romance is decent, but the story is bad. I give this a 7.5.
The first episode play a vital role in world-building and yes, it did its jobs well. But that’s all about it. I feel bad for Miyako because she is very powerful, yet can’t utilize to the fullest extent of her power. Miyako’s personality is just your typical heroine in every romance VN, I guarantee you that. Luckily she will has her own stage to shine in New Episode, so I’m looking forward to that.
Oh and I forgot to mention, one of the H-scenes is very creative.
The game is short so go and give it a try, it will only get better from this point onward.
9-nine-そらいろそらうたそらのおと
Has one of the few best 妹 heroines I have ever seen in the visual novel medium. (not like i’ve played that many games anw)
Deserved a 9/10
A white-haired blood-related little sister heroine named Sora. Do you know another heroine with those same characteristics? I know you do. She’s from Yosuga no Sora btw.
Sora’s personality is built somewhat too chiché - tease their broski on a daily basis - but that only intensify the contrast between her facade and the sweet overbearing feelings for her brother that is hidden inside.
She shared the same VA with Sora from HoshiOri (not the Sora I asked you above) so my opinion might be subjective. Kiritani Hana is the best VA ever.
This episode focuses on the chemistry between our two main characters rather than giving more info about the 9-nine universe. Many moments are memorable, especially the combat and the paperbag H-scene (no joke that scene is just way beyond obscenity).
A little more about the combat, it’s very sentimental. Of course it only serves as a tool to push the story forward but the fight was done really well. Kept me on edge the whole time. I played this on my phone using the Kirikiroid2 emulator so the heavy amount of special effects during the fight gave me eye cancer btw.
All in all, I just simply thirst for some blood-related brother-sister intimate bondings. Don’t judge me.
>> I love Sora so fucking much.
9-nine-はるいろはるこいはるのかぜ
7/10. This is the score I gave it back then. I finished the game on 23 May 2021 so it has been almost 2 years since.
I can’t remember why I rated this one so bad, because this is the most important one out of the 4 episodes in term of lore and world-building.
Yes, spoilers alert.
[Essentially you (yes, I mean you, the reader themselves, not the protagonist) can travel through different timelines and reset time - to go back to the past and avoiding an undesirable outcome that has already happened in another timeline. Is that correct? I couln’t even fully understand it back then either. The info-dump is there and a lot, so there are many twists that caught me by surprise. The forth-wall-breaking moment at the end of the game is quite startling, making me felt like I was a part of this hazy pandemonium as well.].
For the heroine herself, it was meh. As far as I remember, her power is quite OP but the chemistry between the two main characters on the other hand, is really bland.
[Dissociative Identity Disorder GF is a fun quirk, and it can be appealing to some of you. Actually I kinda enjoyed her dominating personality more than the timid one. It’s just sad to see how deranged of a human being I am, and something inside my head is telling me that this is yet to be the lowest point of my life]
And the H-scenes are okay, but not as fun compared to those of the previous two titles. I mean it was still Izuma-sensei handling the art as usual so was there anything worth praising besides the art style?
9-nine-ゆきいろゆきはなゆきのあと
The final chapter of the series.
Let's put aside the adorable heroine and excellent art direction from Izumi-sensei, Episode 4 is truly something else.
The character development of Noa is great, despite being a little cliché. Or maybe the game was trying to decieve you about Noa's personality, so it gave you an illusion that she had truly developed until her true personality was shown? I will leave that for you to find out. The tragedy of the characters hit me hard too, in spite of so many previous equivalently tragic moments the series has pulled in front of my face.
Nonetheless, that made a perfect build-up for the final confrontation against the antagonists. (Mind the plural here, this is not a typo). And it's really satisfying watching the whole battle from start to finish, from one surprise to another. The MAIN villain, genuinely evil with no uterior motive whatsoever - I absolutely love this because this is rare in the VN medium. Most of the time, there would be some kind of tragic backstory or some kinds of stupid reasons that rationalize their “evil” characteristic - which is rather bland and overused. The ultimate form of wickedness is the impulsive one. You exact calamity upon others because you like it. Why even bother reasoning?
This title marks a wonderful ending to the series, though Palette has already released New Episode which is an alternative outcome for the first episode. But hey, I don't care what happens in Miyako route. Lolita for the best.
9/10.
