This is more or less a revamp of what I wrote on my feed, but I felt like writing more than just that. Gotta keep going while my hatred lasts.
Mfw i honestly cant do the 9 games trend bc i only really consider there to be 4 games that actually have had any impact on me as a person among the already very small pool of games i like thus putting other titles in will make the chart discreditable/disrespect as a whole while also make it clear just how much of a video game larper i am and i cant let ppl know i used to play league-
Hoshi Ori is one among four such games, and I'm saying this without any ounce of irony. You can find the reason for that somewhere in this blog of mine.
Video games are intrinsically not life-changing. It needs something else from your contemporary circumstance. Thanks to league i got to befriend with my secondary class, so you can say that the game is life-changing to me in some ways, even when I dropped it five years ago. Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai hit me during one of my critical time in my life, and it's the first time I've ever read one of its kinds - simply bc tone work's made games that no other brand can ever mimic. I will glaze this game to the damn heaven till the day i die knowing people would never see it the same way as i do. Those are what i'd safely define as 'life-changing', not just for its innate value but also my life during that moment. Because it's my life that those games have derailed.
It makes me curious about the stories behind my friends' chart too, if you can humble me being frank.
It’s also for the fact that people are seemingly and wrongfully incorporate ‘games I like’ into ‘games that changed me’, making the premise even more unsettling. ‘Shaped who you are’? Do you realise how mental that sounds? Why even go such length to belittle your life? What new perspectives on life and the world did you develop after playing minecraft, please do tell. Unless you went to work in game development or something.
I dont have the right to judge whether or not a medium or whatnot is worthwhile to you. But i sure as hell could give a list of 9 games I think are incredible examples of the potential of the medium, yet I am not learning life lessons from fucking elden ring and anyone who says they did is completely full of shit and I’d grab you over the screen and give you a flick on the forehead. Come the fuck on. Even my favorite game of all time that I played as a kid (plants vs. zombies) only left the lasting impression of making me enjoy that style of video game more than I otherwise would have. The fact that I like modern fps or don't particularly like crpgs really doesn't tell you much about me as a person. I know it’s my ego speaking but anyone with half a brain knows that by any metric of productivity and what most would consider 'personal development' they absolutely are, smacking heavily of people desperately wanting videogames to be seen as 'not a waste of time’ or ‘haha you have such a niche taste’ in hope of having 'a unique personality'.
I actually think it's more so an accurate indicator of when one started playing videogames, or a game of that genre. It makes perfect sense for a 12/13 year old child to be really impressed by video games but I only really started to play games regularly at like 15. Or how a soneone's childhood differs from one's another. You had a video game console when you were six? That's nice 'cause i've never experienced one till like nine yo and my first ever encounter was an xbox360. My first console game ever was angry bird and i played with that shitbox. My first ever pokemon game was emerald and i played it on my nokia c3-00 via gba emulator. For once, this trend is statically fun because at the very least you can gaze into how everyone you knew grew up just from a little glance at this chart, if not for its pretentiousness.
Also no shade but if you put league or marvel rivals or any gacha game in that 9 games trend i’m lowkey worried for your wellbeing (mine included).
If we're being brutally honest no individual game 'shaped who I am' but if I'd put the tens of thousands of hours I've spent gaming/reading VN into some other pursuit my life probably would look quite different. That's probably the only significant 'shaping force' happening here. But it's fine, i like how it is right now. It's kinda nice actually.
And if you agree with me, I grant you the title of real human.
Bonus: Forget about 9 games that shaped me, these are 9 games that raped me.
