While Mauritius is home to only a few mangrove species, each plays a unique role in the coastal architecture. Identifying them is the first step toward conservation.
The Dominant Resident: Rhizophora mucronata (Red Mangrove)
How to Identify: Look for the iconic "prop roots" or "stilt roots" that arch out from the trunk and into the mud. These provide stability in soft sediments.
Role: This is the most abundant species in Mauritius, forming the vast majority of our forest cover. It is a "pioneer" species, often being the first to colonize new areas.
The Vibrant Specialist: Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Large-leafed Orange Mangrove)
How to Identify: Unlike the Red Mangrove, this species features "knee roots"—woody projections that pop up from the ground like bent knees. It is also known for its striking orange-to-red flowers.
Role: Often found further inland than Rhizophora, it adds structural diversity to the forest.
A New Discovery: Heritiera littoralis (Looking-glass Mangrove)
Scientific Note: Recent research in 2025 has identified the first findings of Heritiera littoralis in Mauritius, a significant discovery for local biodiversity conservation (Matsui, 2025).

Mangroves are often described as the "cradle of the ocean." They act as a vital bridge between the land and the coral reefs of the Mauritius lagoons.
Physical Protection: The dense, tangled network of prop roots creates a complex underwater "cage". This structure is too small for large predators to enter, providing a safe haven for juvenile fish, crabs, and prawns.
The Food Web: Mangrove leaves that fall into the water (litterfall) decompose and provide a nutrient-rich "soup" of organic matter, fueling the growth of these young organisms.
The Great Migration: Once these species reach maturity and are large enough to defend themselves, they migrate from the safety of the mangroves into the open lagoons and coral reefs of Mauritius.
Mauritius is home to sites of "International Importance" under the Ramsar Convention, with Pointe d'Esny being a crown jewel of our wetland conservation.
Global Significance: Pointe d'Esny is recognized as a Ramsar site because it contains rare and representative examples of natural wetland types, including significant mangrove stands and associated mudflats.
Ecological Buffer: These wetlands act as natural filters, trapping sediments and pollutants before they reach the sensitive Blue Bay Marine Park.
Biodiversity Hotspot: This site supports various species of migratory birds and provides critical habitat for the very mangrove species mentioned in our district-wise data.
