The Albion Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC) embarked on a Mangrove Propagation Programme since 1995 so as to protect and restore the denuded areas.
Much of the swamps have thus been saved and today mangrove propagation is encouraged throughout the island.
The area covered under mangrove propagation as at 2025 is ~22.9 hectares (see table showing the mangroves propagated at selected sites around Mauritius).
