Advising Philosophy

As an academic advisor I aspire to assist and guide students in their educational and career goals. It is important to me as an advisor that I am open minded to see where I can guide them in their academic development, plan according to their desires, help them achieve their personal goals, and support them in their dreams. As I assist my fellow students, I plan to do so through appreciative and developmental advising. These two advising approaches will allow me to uphold to NACADA’S core values which are Caring, Commitment, Empowerment, Inclusivity, Integrity, Professionalism, and Respect. As such, I make a personal commitment to all students in the following areas:

Available/Accessible: All students should have the ability to access recourses and tools to better their education and potential outcomes. As an academic advisor, I plan to be a resource and tool that is available to the student population. I will be available via appointment in three ways: phone, video, and in-person. I will also be accessible via email to answer any questions. I will make sure that my appointment scheduler is updated continually to reflect openness and accessibility as well.

Professional Development/Education:  I believe that education is a continual process in my field of work. As such, I promise to keep up on the best academic advising practices by attending professional development trainings, conferences, and team meetings. I will make sure to keep up with school policies, departmental changes, graduation and catalog requirements, and campus recourses such as tutoring and mental health recourses. I promise to seek help when new challenges arise and to decrease any barriers a student may be dealing with.

Inclusive: There are many setbacks that can prevent a student from obtaining a degree such as financial and social inequalities. First generational students are also facing many challenges while taking this big step. My goal is to make sure to actively communicate to all students that they are always welcomed and will have a support system with me. I will support them in many ways by being open, non-judgmental, honest, and joyful in their educational journey.
