My Path Towards Higher Education
Graduating with a bachelor's degree was a huge success in my life and one that I didn't think would come true. I fought long and hard to prove to myself that the struggles I faced growing up wouldn't interfere with my success in earning a degree.
The struggles I faced in elementary and all the way up to high school, constantly had me feeling inadequate. I struggled to learn basic math and proper writing techniques. This made almost every other subject just as difficult to learn.
After high school, I attended Salt Lake Community College so I could take the developmental math and English courses. This allowed me to gain foundational knowledge, skills, and techniques needed for future classes. Once again, I felt stupid having to step into these courses, but I knew that If I wanted to break this cycle I was in, I had to lose my pride.
After working my way up in developmental classes, I transferred to Snow College. Snow College was another step to prove my ability that I belonged in a higher education. I did struggle in Math 1050, but to my surprise, I did pass. I also took courses such as biology and human-geography that paved the way for me to complete my degree in Human-Environmental Geography at Utah State University after I gained my AS degree in 2012.
2013 I attended Utah State University where I met some of the brightest and intellectual professors and peers. They helped me gain a better understanding of myself and helped me learn new ideas and concepts. I took challenging courses in natural resource management, environmental policy, political geography, and even completed undergraduate research on climate change perceptions among USU students. I even managed to receive a hunting license through a wildlife and management course as well. Never used it because I didn't have the guts to hunt, but I did find value in understanding management practices among hunters, agricultural workers, and policy makers within this course. I graduated in Spring of 2015.
Since graduation, I have worked in higher education within Testing Services, Registration, Finance Department, and Academic Advising. I have learned valuable skills in assisting students in all aspects of their education and helping them become independent in their learning. I enjoy being able to relate to them based on my prior experience and assist them in ways I didn't think possible. It has been a rewarding experience thus far.
