In this fun little exercise, students write a paragraph describing a picture and see how their writing turns out when illustrated by an image-generating AI such as Open AI's DALL·E.
Procedure (Student)
Choose one picture from your smartphone album.
Make sure to select a picture that you can share with your classmates.
Avoid pictures showing other people's faces or your house.
Do not choose images that contain copyrighted materials.
Write a paragraph describing it as accurately as possible.
Feel free to look up words and expressions online!
When you are done, check the grammar and spelling on online writing tools such as DeepL Write.
Share the original picture and your paragraph on Padlet.
Compare the original picture and the AI-generated image.
Did it turn out as you intended?
What would you change in your paragraph to make it more closely resemble the original picture?
Procedure (Teacher)
Collect the paragraphs from the students.
I used Padlet because I wanted to make the images and paragraphs visible to everyone.
Generate the images using an AI image generator.
I used Open AI's DALL·E 3 because it has just been released for ChatGPT Plus users, but there are other platforms available to generate image from text.
Here are some examples of my students' work.
Using "colleagues" instead of "teammates" summoned some workers in suits on the track.
AI's image of many shibainus sleeping.
AI could not draw "Fuji, cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, depending on the season" well...
AI autocorrected "skyscape" misspelled as "skyscaper" into "skyscraper."
