Geminates in Japanese
I am interested in the fine phonetic details and the perceptual mechanism of geminate consonants, as produced and perceived by native and non-native speakers of languages with and without contrastive consonant length.
My work on geminates is partly in collaboration with the members of the Speech Communication Lab at Sophia University, Tokyo, under MUSP (Multilingual UltraSound Project).
Liquids in Japanese
I currently focus on the articulatory aspects of liquid consonants in Japanese, and their implication to language learning.
My work on liquids is supported by the JSPS Kakenhi Grant, number JP20K21979.
Here is a recent manuscript based on the acoustics chapter of my dissertation: Acoustic Characteristics of Geminated Liquids in Japanese
Gender identity construction in speech
I investigate the role of suprasegmental features and other phonetic correlates in gender identity construction by speaker of Japanese.
This work is in collaboration with Shigeko Okamoto at UCSC.
Here is our paper published in the Journal of Sociolinguistics: Gender norms and styling in Japanese conversation: A multilevel analysis
Documentation and Phonation in SLZ
I was part of the documentation project of Santiago Laxopa Zapotec (SLZ), with an analytical focus on distinct phonation types.
I was also part of the organizing team of the Nido de Lenguas, a partnership of Linguists at UCSC and Senderos. I enjoyed creating language learning materials such as card games, as well as participating in community outreach activities.
Degemination in Japanese loanwords from Italian
A phonological analysis on how Italian geminates are adapted when borrowed into Japanese. The most updated version of the paper is available here.
Stress misplacement in English
Investigation on how stress misplacement on English nouns affects word processing by native speakers of English, focusing on its recovery.
