Mammoth Cave

A Beautiful dark place

The known and the unknown about this huge underground lava cave, one of the largest in the world but the only one that is open to the public. So much history in this Mammoth Cave, we have yet to know. What a beautiful place to visit in Idaho, but not a lot of residents have ever visited this place, where a piece of history and art now lives.

If you are going to take a walk into the cave this is the sign you will see before entering the trail. Not to appealing but if you like history you will want to take a walk here.

silver, dazzling rock walls

Several caves in the world have a life form that grows on the walls giving it the appearance of pure silver. Idaho's Mammoth Cave is one of these rare caves. How the life form got here will always be a mystery. It is beautiful to see. Many mineral deposits with their many colors add much beauty to the huge cavern.

This sign is in the cave by the writing of the names left by some early settlers in 1902, they stumbled onto the cave opening. They didn't have flashlights so they used torches. They left their names on a wall of the cave as you can see in the picture above with the charcoal from their torches.

micro-organisms live in a lot of caves

This white micro-organism you can see here, not sure as to how it got here but Mr. Olsen thinks bats probably brought it in some time ago.
