Ever wonder what sets off a student panic attack? “Five minutes left.” 3-word phrase that rings through the classroom like an alarm bell no one ever wants to hear on examinations. Suddenly, those last few minutes feel like a high-stakes showdown, as if our very future hangs in the balance. And for lab students? It’s not just drama—we're actually in the trenches.
I’m a CMUlab student, of course every week is hell week but exam week is the ultimate boss battle. Classrooms turn into a melting pot of students sporting fevers, coughs, and all sorts of ailments—some even a delightful mix of them all. Unrecognizable tired faces due to restless studying nights is very common here. With our frantic pacing, muttering to ourselves, and blank stares as we try to summon memories from our study sessions, a non-CMU lab student would probably think they've stumbled into a zombie apocalypse. It’s like a scene from walking dead or a documentary of someone who has gone mad. Well, we’re CMUlab students; of course we are already used to these kind of stuff.
On the third day of exams at precisely 2 PM, the cheers from students fill the air—signaling freedom! But the battle isn’t over yet. The real turmoil begins as we spiral into overthinking about our scores. “Did I even pass?” becomes the mantra, followed by a desperate prayer: “Lord, just let me pass.” Sometimes, this exam madness makes me feel like what Sza would say, that life’s better on saturn.
But whatever struggles we face during exam week, it’s all worth it in the end. After all, how boring would life be without those questions that leave you scratching your head? And what’s more thrilling than shading the wrong letter on your ZipGrade sheet? We learn to endure those last five minutes, desperately trying to shade or review at least 50 items. We also become pros at accepting our mistakes—especially when our scores resemble something from a horror movie. Sure, we might tackle the same challenges over and over, but each one teaches us something new. The important thing is, we conquer them. We’re CMU lab students—definitely the warriors of CMULAB with academic excellence through hardwork and noble virtues!
It may be hard jumbling activities back-to-back, or late-night cramming for tomorrow's exam, but what matters is the experience we have and the enjoyment we get from our friends and classmates. Carry on students!
At CMULHS, you often hear the phrase, “Juniors pa man gud, lipay2 pa jud na sila run wapay research giatiman.” It might sound a tad bitter, but it’s just the seniors' way of expressing their mix of awe and envy towards juniors who roam carefree, blissfully research-free. Being a senior means juggling projects and wishing you could go back to seventh grade;no research, just wandering and being cute.
The journey from brainstorming ideas to navigating literature reviews, proposals, endless consultations, and finally defending your work feels like a never-ending saga. It's like The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere," but with a research twist—students in CMUlab resonate with the line: “Here, doing research every year, switching topics with a wave of her hand. Nobody can deny that there's something there. Research is everywhere.”
Then comes the moment of truth: the defense. All those late nights culminate in a presentation where you must brave the scrutiny of the panel, fielding their critiques like a champ. The key to survival? Answering their questions with confidence.
But amidst all the stress, research also brings us closer to our community. Even when our hypotheses don’t pan out, we uncover vital discussions and strengthen our bonds with teammates, learning how to communicate through challenges. Engaging in research not only enhances our academic journey but also equips us with the skills we need for future success.
