Remote Mentoring Program @ Govt. Degree College for Women

Govt. Degree College for Women, Khammam was established in 1965. This is the only Women’s college in entire district running in Government sector. It strives to impart value based education to girl students to make them globally competent. As majority of the students are from rural background, they need proper guidance and mentoring to shape the career and look for future prospects.
As a part of community initiative to mentor the girl students from rural areas, started working with the students from various streams since Feb 2016. Conducted workshops/sessions on Career Guidance, Work Readiness and Time Management to motivate these rural students and initiated remote mentoring to provide necessary guidance in achieving their career goals.

- Strengthening Alumni
Phase I:
As a part of this program, launched Remote Mentoring program on 11th Feb 2017. The event started with brief introduction of the program and then we conducted screening test to 80 students from all streams. Students from 1st/2nd and 3rd (all streams) divided into groups and they will be attached to a mentor. In addition to the workshops and training, mentors will provide necessary guidance on various aspects on need basis.
Based on discussions with each individual, selected 30 students who would be participating in the program for the next academic year. Each one has a different story and facing multiple challenges, but there is a confidence in their voice and the desire to keep individual identity. Many of them have a specific goal and a strong determination to achieve it. At the same time they are also looking to find a small job and support their family while they continue focusing on the long-term goal. The determination and the strong desire are very impressive.
Phase 1 focus is to offer them the support needed to make them/their dreams successful by this program.
Phase II:
Strengthening Alumni
Promoting Entrepreneurship
Sustainability of Remote mentoring
STEM Workshops: Conducts Science & Engineering Workshops to promote STEM Careeers. Helps Government and non-for-profit schools in designing STEM sessions.
School Adoption Program - Govt. Primary School, Pochammabasti, Mehdipatnam
Govt. Primary School, Pochammabasti, Mehdipatnam:
This school is located in a low profile area (Pochammabasti where most of the children are from migrated families completely dependant of daily-wages works. The School had a strength of 80 students with just 2 teachers and was operating with very low attendance.. With a focus to improve the school quality, engaged volunteers to conduct extra curricular, co-curricular activities, participated in events like Independence Day, Republic Day and Children's Day etc., to motivate the students by conducting various competitions.
25+ volunteers involved in various events since 2010 and we have raised a community grant in 2013 to support this school and improve the quality of education. Part of this project we have setup Digital Classroom, Science Lab and Activity based learning.
Able to motivate the staff to start assembly with the school band, which resulted 95% attendance in the first hour itself. Huge impact was observed due to the proposed project and the activities we conducted. We often t interacted with local community and initiated parent/teacher Meetings which received good response and feedback from local community on improving the standards. Current strength of the school is 140 operating in 2 class rooms(?). School HM has submitted formal request to Govt. Officials to extend 2-3 class rooms.
