Our Why
To cultivate a learning culture through exchanging skills & knowledge for a better specialty coffee industry.
MBF Brew Master 2023 aims to cultivate a learning culture; hence we encourage brewers to be open-minded and ardent to learn together with the intention of improving ourselves and specialty coffee industry as a whole.
In conjunction with the topic of our episode 3, we've organised a friendly competition which provides opportunities to coffee brewers to showcase their brewing skills and join interactive sharing sessions with other participants and judges from Malaysia's coffee industry and community.

MBF Brew Master: Judges' Choice Category
The Judges' Choice Category has a similar format to WBrC Compulsory Service, competitors have to brew three cups of coffee simultaneously, and the judges will be scoring using the WBrC Compulsory Service Scoresheet. Brewer with the highest total score will be awarded as the "MBF Brew Master".

MBF Brew Master: Public Choice Category
The purpose of having Public Choice Category is to reward the brewer whose brew recipe can be replicated by others across several settings and conditions yet bring out the best of cup coffee. "MBF Brew Recipe Master" will be awarded to the best cup with the highest final votes that is chosen by the public who attend to Malaysia Barista Forum.

A side story about how did MBF committee choose the competition bean.
We did a blind cupping session at the Falcon Coffees Asia office, which is located in Johor Bahru, together with Richard. After writing down our comments towards the coffee, we pointed to the cup that we liked, and we all pointed to the same cup, which is this beautiful coffee from Lucero Anayeli farm.

The final score is tabulated by adding the following :
Three (3) Total Cup Scores, 1 from each of the three (3) sensory judges (63x3),
Total Head Judge Score (24), and
Brew Plan Accuracy Score (20).
The maximum possible Final Total Score is 233.
