Mia with her new brothers and sister

Mia has adjusted well with the kids. She has studied the faces of each member of our family and recognizes them with a smile when each of them walk in the room. She thinks Emily is wonderful... and Emily is absolutely in love with her.

On March 26, 2006 at 4:47 PM, Mia officially became a citizen of the United States. She wasn’t considered a U.S. citizen until her foot touched the ground of the United States. The picture to the left captured this event. We are so happy to be back with our entire family together. As I look at the pictures, I can’t believe how many of us there are… it makes me so happy to be part of this family. We are blessed with happiness beyond belief. People always ask me how I always keep a smile on my face… the answer is captured in the picture below of all of us together. Thanks for your interest in tracking the progress of this special trip… and even more, thank you for your prayers. They were answered in such a wonderful way… and we give the glory and thanks for everything to God.With much love and incredible joy…Mia, David, Emily, Dustin, Daniel, Carla & Danny

Evening in Hong Kong - Saturday, March 25th

We took Mia to downtown Hong Kong this evening for dinner. We had a great time.Hong Kong is the most beautiful city I've ever seen. The skyline view from the harbor is awesome. I attached a picture, but it doesn't really do the city justice because it was a very dreary night. We get to come home tomorrow... and can't wait.Love, Danny, Carla & Mia

Mia's Journey Home – Saturday, March 25 – 1:23 PM (Hong Kong)... 12:23 AM (Atlanta)

We flew to Hong Kong this morning. Mia’s first flight went smooth (please pray that the 15 hour flight tomorrow goes as well).Hong Kong looks like an awesome place. I’d love to come back someday and spend time seeing and learning about the area… but for now, all we want to do is get home.Mia continues to amaze us. After this short amount of time, we couldn’t imagine life without her.Love,Danny & Carla

Mia's Journey Home – Friday, March 24 – 8:52 PM (Guangzhou)... 7:52 AM (Atlanta)

Today we went to the U.S. Consulate to have Mia sworn in as a U.S. citizen. She will officially be a U.S. citizen when her foot touches U.S. ground for the first time… which, Lord willing, will happen in Chicago just before noon on Sunday. Today was a dreary day outside, but the sun was shining bright inside because of beautiful little Mia. We fly to Hong Kong in the morning and will be there for one day… then we will fly home on Sunday. We can’t wait to get home with our complete family. While I’m writing this, Mia is kissing Carla all over her face… She is so full of love and likes to share it. We are absolutely in love with her. Please pray for the safe completion of our journey. With Love, Danny & CarlaMia with her little friend

Mia's Journey Home – Thursday, March 23 – 4:30PM (Guangzhou)... Thursday, March 23 – 3:30 AM (Atlanta)

Today has been somewhat of a down day. We applied for Mia’ visa... we will get it tomorrow. Tomorrow we also go to the U.S. Consulate to have Mia sworn in as a U.S. citizen. This means she will officially be a U.S. citizen when we land in Chicago on Sunday. It’s been rainy all week and we are very homesick for Daniel, Dustin, Emily & David. We are also homesick for a delicious Domino’s Pizza. One can only eat so much pigeon and fish heads, and then it starts to get boring. If any of my friends from Domino’s see this, please email me a thin crust pizza with Pepperoni, Mushroom & Banana Peppers. All is going better than expected. Thanks for your prayers… and I give thanks to God for answering them so favorably. With love,Danny & Carla

Dose of reality - Post #2 for March 22nd

As Carla and I are in this wonderful time of happiness, with Mia throwing kisses at me while I type this... I am reminded that less than 4 days ago she was laying in one of the beds pictured above in the orphanage shown in the picture. Look how big that building is... and how many beds are lined up in that one room within that big building. And remember, there are thousands of orphanages just like that one. She laid in there for 9 ½ months before we were able to get her… and many other children lay there much longer. Please pray for those children that they find happy homes.

My heart is changed forever.

Mia's Journey Home – Wednesday, March 22 – 7:00 AM (Guangzhou)... Tuesday, March 21 - 6:00 PM (Atlanta)

First... HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUSTIN!!! We love you so much and miss you.

The two pictures below are of Dustin as a baby and Dustin now.

As many of you know, Dustin is our son and he turns 13 today (Wednesday).

Tuesday was another blessed day for us. We had Mia’s medical exam… and everything went well. Some of the other families in our group were not as fortunate... One family learned that their baby may not be able to hear, and others found their babies to be sick. Please keep these families in your prayers… especially the child that may not be able to hear.

I wandered out into the local marketplace today and found some very interesting things to eat (Snake, Turtle, Scorpion, Cat, Rat, Pigeon, Goose Hand, etc...). I will spare you the pictures of this stuff unless you want them. If you do, email me at dannymalamis@gmail.com and I’ll send you a few pictures.

Take care… Please keep us in your prayers… and thank you so much for showing interest in this special journey we’re on.

The area we're in now is much more beautiful than Beijing... below are a few pics.

Mia's Journey Home – Monday, March 20 – 8:38 PM (Guangzhou)... 7:38 AM (Atlanta)

First… You wouldn’t believe how wonderful she is. We are just amazed at how beautiful, fun and full of life she is.

Today Mia officially became our daughter. We had our interview and notarization appointment, and all went well. We applied for her visa and had her passport picture taken. Tomorrow we are scheduled for her medical exam… and the rest of the week is filled with completing the legal process.

She has not cried once since we got her. She loves being held and loves playing with our hands and faces. She gets so excited when you pick her up and she makes this funny little face we can’t get enough of. We gave her a bath for the first time this evening and she absolutely loved it.

She is so wonderful… and we are so blessed!

Mia's Journey Home – Sunday, March 19 - 7:00 PM (Guangzhou)... 6:00 AM (Atlanta)

I don’t even know where to start or how to explain the events of the last three hours. We feel so unbelievably blessed. Mia is more wonderful than our best dreams about her.

It was so beautiful when they brought her into the room and gave her to Carla. Mia reached out for her and got the biggest grin on her face I’ve ever seen. She is funny, beautiful & amazing. I can’t wait for everyone to meet her and get a sense of her wonderful little personality. We have been praying for such a long time that her heart be prepared for this day and for it to go smooth for her. God has exceeded our request… as he has done with so many other things in our lives. I am so thankful to Him… and give him so much thanks and well deserved praise.

She is sleeping right now. Carla and I have been watching her sleep with amazement that we finally have her.

With love,

Danny & Carla

Mia's Journey Home – Saturday, March 18 - 8:30 PM (Beijing)... 7:30 AM (Atlanta)

It's 7:45PM (Beijing time) and we have less than 20 hours left until Mia is in our arms!!! After 17 months of praying & waiting, we're now at the point we've thought through so many times... the point of incredible joy from seeing her, holding her, and becoming her parents forever. Tonight is like being a kid on Christmas eve X a million.

We went to see the Great Wall today. It was 1.5 hours away from Beijing and well worth the trip… It was amazing! The temperature there was about 20 degrees less than Beijing… and we were happy to see vendors selling hats and scarves.

Tonight we enjoyed yet one more meal at our local McDonald’s. You would be amazed at how good a Big Mac looks after looking at menus with chicken heads & sheep entrails.

I have attached a few pictures from our day…

While the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square & The Forbidden City have been enjoyable, educational & quite amazing, tomorrow will make them seem like nothing. Stay tuned!

Mia's Journey Home - Friday, March 17 - 8:05 PM (Beijing)... 7:05 AM (Atlanta)

Part of the process we are going through is designed to teach us about the Chinese culture… and we are learning a lot in a short amount of time. At times it feels more like we’re on vacation than going through an adoption process. This part is valuable, but we can’t wait to get Mia and get back home to Daniel, Dustin, Emily & David.

The scheduled time we get Mia has been pushed back a few hours. The new time is Sunday, 3:30PM (Beijing time)… Sunday, 2:30AM (Atlanta time).

Today we went to Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, took a Rickshaw tour and went to see an Acrobat show. The Forbidden City was unbelievable. Below you will find a few pictures.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to see the Great Wall and learn about the history. We'll update you tomorrow night.

Take care... and thanks for your interest in this important time of our life.

Mia's Journey Home - Thursday, March 16 - 9:15pm (Beijing)... 8:15am (Atlanta)

This was a day full of lots of much needed exercise. We can't wait to go to Guangzhou on Sunday to pick up Mia.

A few things to share from the day...

1. The menu of every restaurant was very interesting, to say the least. Duck bills… Sheep entrails, other parts of animals (all but the good parts)… deep fried bullfrog… chicken heads… you name it, it’s here. We have six Domino's Pizza stores here, but none close to our hotel... If we were going to be in Beijing longer, I would find one and camp out in it for the rest of the trip.

2. While we were shopping in a local grocery store for a few things, a butcher was chopping some beef in the middle of the store… some fell on the floor and a lady picked it up and laid it back on the table for him... he put it in the pile with the rest of the meat without thinking twice.

3. They have very cool shoes here, and great prices on them… the problem is, every store I walked in, they looked at me and shook their head at my shoe size (size 9 is about as big as they sell)… Carla was in the same boat for women’s shoes.

4. We found a Starbucks. Every place we’ve been has been much less expensive than in the U.S. (our Domino's Stores here run an average ticket of $6.00 compared to $17.00 in the U.S.), but Starbucks has somehow figured out how to get $5 for a cup of coffee.

We'll give you and update tomorrow.

Mia's Journey Home - Wednesday, March 15 - 9:35pm (Beijing)... 8:35am (Atlanta)

We arrived in Beijing safely. I can't imagine making that trip on a regular basis. Below you will see a few pics from the trip... (The jet, the flight path, Carla in the Beijing airport & the view from our hotel). I can't wait to upload the pictures of Mia when we get her on Sunday.

Mia's Journey Home

To: Family & FriendsCarla, the kids & I have been in the process of adopting a baby from China for the last 17 months... and we are now one week away from holding her for the first time. Her name is Mia Shao Wei Malamis and she was born on June 2, 2005 (June 2nd is Carla's birthday too)… How cool is God for giving us that as a sign that Mia is meant to be ours, and we are meant to be hers.Carla & I leave for China on Tuesday, March 14th and, God willing, we will return with Mia on Sunday, March 26th. We will actually get Mia on Sunday, March 19th at noon, Beijing time (Eastern US time = Saturday, March 18th… 11:00PM).We are going to use this site to keep those we care about updated on how the journey is going as well as a spot to post pictures as we are able. We only have a few pictures posted on the site now, but we will update them as often as possible. Internet access will be somewhat limited as we travel to the different areas in China. Please feel free to visit this site over the next two weeks for updates. Please keep Mia, Daniel, Dustin, Emily, David, Carla & me in your prayers over the next couple of weeks........Danny & Carla__________________________________________________________________The picture at the top was the first picture we saw of Mia (Jan 5, 2006 @1:15PM).
