TATTOO AFTERCARE
A tattoo’s healing process typically takes about 2-4 weeks. Keep the wrapping on for a minimum of two hours. After removing your wrapping, you should gently cleanse your new tattoo with an antibacterial, fragrance free soap + warm water. Don’t dry your tattoo with a towel, let it dry on its own. Keeping your tattoo clean and washing a few times daily will avoid a potential infection. At least 2-3 times a day apply a small amount of Bepanthen.
What to avoid:
· The Sun - If you must be out in the sun, keep your tattoo covered.
· Tight-fitting clothing - The least amount of contact with fabric is usually the best call while healing a new tattoo. Loose-fitting clothing should be worn around the area for a week minimum.
· Sleeping on your tattoo - It is common for your tattoo to seep excess plasma, fluid, and ink — which may stick to sheets, blankets, or clothing. To be safe, you can place a clean thin towel between you and the sheets. If in the morning your tattoo is stuck to fabric, don’t peel it off! Wet it off gently with cool or lukewarm water.
· Picking - Scabbing is a very normal part of the tattoo healing process. DO NOT PICK THE SCAB. Scabbing will typically be the same colour as the pigment that was used. If you pick or scrub your scab, you risk pulling out the colour or causing hypertrophic scarring. Let the tattoo heal by itself. Patience is virtue.
· Submerging - Submerging a new tattoo in standing water may expose open skin to unwanted bacteria. This means no baths, pools, jacuzzies, lakes, ponds or the sea.
· Over moisturizing - If you've noticed a sudden outbreak of pimples around your tattoo, it’s likely you’ve used too much lotion and the skin cannot breathe. Only use a very small amount of Bepanthen.
Professional tattoo artists do everything possible to ensure safe tattooing practices. However, they are not medical professionals. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe pain or swelling, prolonged oozing of plasma with or without colour, or thick, hard scabs that are bleeding red blood.
Piercing Aftercare
Facial/surface/torso piercings -Keep things simple and clean your piercing using cotton buds and a sea salt solution, which is a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in a cup full of freshly boiled (and cooled) water - Do not use TCP, methylated/surgical spirits, alcohol wipes or anything containing Benzylkonium Chloride/BZK to clean your piercing - Do not remove your jewellery to clean your piercing - Always use fresh water to clean off the sea salt solution or it will dry out the area too much - Wash your hands well before touching your piercing for any reason - Avoid applying makeup to the area - Avoid swimming in the ocean or chlorinated water
